Example: the start of my book "Room 10", in which a cancer patient must solve a kidnapping from within her hospital room.

Beep… Beep…
The heart rate monitor by Vera’s bed was beeping steadily. Her vitals seemed stable at this time, though she still felt very under the weather. The curtains hanging on the walls of room 10 waved in front of the open window, the light afternoon breeze slightly cooling down the surrounding air, making the summer heat much more bearable.
“You really like those books, don’t you?” came a voice from beside Vera. The teenage girl looked to her right, her eyes meeting the friendly, yet teasing smile of her older brother Josh. She grinned shyly. Seems like she’d gotten so invested in the story, that she didn’t notice him entering the room. Again.
“They’re about to reveal exactly who did it.” Vera responded in an excitable, yet weak tone of voice. “I have my own theories… The main character’s older sister has been very suspicious the whole time.” Josh chuckled lightly. He always appreciated his sister’s fondness for such things, though he never really understood it.
“Sounds like you’ve got it all worked out.”
“You know I’ve always wanted to be a detective!” she replied, adjusting her oxygen mask, making sure it sat comfortably over her mouth and nose.
“Mom and dad outside?” she asked, to which Josh nodded softly.
 “They’re doing more paperwork.”
“It’s insane how many papers they need to sign for this. I’m dying from cancer while their hands are dying from arthritis.” the girl joked. Making fun of her condition, as well as other things around and within Heartglow Hospital, was one of her favourite ways to cope. The sixteen-year-old slid her bookmark in, and set the book down on her side-table, next to the bouquet of flowers her mother had brought her. A nice gesture. Reminded her of home, and all the times she’d help mom out at her flower stall. Something that she’d likely done for the last time, though, she wished she could again. At least once. Just… one more time… one more good day, that’s all she wanted.
...no, she couldn’t let the intrusive thoughts win. She’d make it through! Or so she hoped, at least.
But right as Vera was blocking out said thoughts, the door opened once more, as two pairs of footsteps made their way closer and closer to her bed. One pair heavy, stern and focused. The other pair light and peppy.
“Vera! How are you feeling? Has the nurse checked your temperature yet? You’re looking even more tired today, are they taking care of you properly?!”
“Great to see you too, mom.” the teen responded, her gaze shifting from her mother Yasmine, the cause of the stern pair of footsteps, over to her father Nick, who was ever the optimist.
 “Hey dad.”
 “Hey Vee.”

Example: Dust, a character I created. He's a scientist who was too afraid to try anything new, so he took drastic measures to remedy it.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The version of Micah Park from the universe in question here, is not unlike many others. Smart, friendly, high-ranked scientist at GRACIE labs.
But one thing's different.

This Micah never found his courage.

In most cases, he learns to step up. He comes into his own and grows, trying new things like a scientist should. But in this universe, he never stopped being scared. Scared of danger, scared to explore outside his comfort zones, and scared he'd always be in the shadow of his peers.

So he decided to change that. But how?
What's the best way to solve a problem, if you're a scientist and inventor like he is?

Well, science. Invention.
And that's when it hit him. He would build a machine to eliminate his sense of fear entirely.

After days, possibly weeks of painstaking planning, building and discovering, he'd done it. Micah had successfully built a machine that could remove his fear.

Scared, but determined, he stepped inside, flicked it on, and--

... it worked.

He stepped back out, fearless. Literally. He felt brand new, like he could take on the entire world!
But removing an emotion, well, it doesn't come without side-effects and consequences.

You see, removing an emotion causes it to become "voided". In Micah's case, he ended up with Voided Fear. But something obviously needs to fill that void.  So how does one fill the void of fear, without feeling it?

You make other people feel it.

Without even knowing it, Micah needs to see other people feel fear, in order to prevent himself from going mad. He's not aware of this himself, however. Causing fear has become instinctive. He knows he's doing it, but he doesn't know why it feels so good. Why he can't stop.

But HOW does he do it? Does he have a goal?
Well, yes. And that goal never changed.
The goal of a scientist is to learn. To gain knowledge. To BE smart. The smartest version of yourself you can be.

The smartest version... of Micah.

He built a second machine. One that can take him to other universes. With other versions of himself.
Arriving there he manipulates, controls, and plays with anyone he needs to, in order to track down that universe's version of him. Once he's found them, he manipulates THEM too, learning every last little thing that version of him knows. And once that's done, he weighs the options.

He wants to be the smartest version of himself, after all. The smartest Micah. But what if the one he's just learned from has the chance of becoming smarter than him?

If that's not a problem, he waves goodbye, and leaves back to his own universe. But if it /is/ a possibility... well, accidents happen in the lab all the time, right? Scientists die in horrible accidents all the time. And sometimes, they don't even find the body.

After a while, Micah variants from all across the multiverse started communicating with each other. Warning each other that one of them is out to kill. That when he's there, someone tends to bite the DUST.

A fitting codename.
Dust knows manipulation like no other. So despite the other Micahs being aware of him now, his goals continue. His killings continue, until he is the smartest Micah.

But can Dust really be the smartest version of himself, if he doesn't know a crucial detail about his own voided fears?

Example: a fully scripted scene from "Requiem", an animated show idea I've been kicking around for a few years.

INT. "THE DARK ROOM" -- MIDDAY

Start in darkness. Lights on ceiling suddenly click on, showing Harper standing. They react to the light. Background remains dark.
Cut to The Strings, looming over Harper.

TREBLE
Weeelcome, prophesized one.

 BASS
Weee are The Strings. Disciiiples of the great--

HARPER
A prophecy? Really? Isn't that a /little/ cliché?

Cut to Harper grinning smugly, which fades to a look of confusion, mixed with boredom. Then cut back to The Strings. Bass leans forward, Treble nods along as he speaks.

BASS
Weeell... yes. But it's the truuuth! The prophecy tells of the ooone who will plaaay the melody, and enter the bodyyyy of their Note!

Cut back to Harper, looking completely dumbfounded for a moment.

HARPER
... I have no idea what you just said.

Cut to wide shot of the room, Harper begins pacing back and forth, Bass stands back up next to Treble.

HARPER
So, I played the tune my grandma left in the attic, and you all heard it, and sent me the... Lightswitch, or whatever you called it...

TREBLE
The Raaadiant Rhythmicus!

Cut to close up of harper, who stops pacing in order to respond, accompanied by a thoughtful expression and a smirk. They start pacing again after a moment, camera walks with them.

HARPER
Yeah, that. Dumb name, by the way. Rhythmicus isn't even a word, you just--

TREBLE
SILENCE!

Harper stops abruptly, looking surprised. Camera cuts back to The Strings.

TREBLE
The prooophecy is already underwaaay! You will seek out the aaancient melody, and plaaay it to heal our benevolent ruuuler! Your queeest begins noooow...

Camera cuts to Harper, who looks scared. They reach out a hand towards The Strings.

HARPER
Wait, but I don't--

A Staff Portal opens behind Harper, they get sucked in while screaming. Portal closes, camera cuts back to The Strings.

BASS
Luuunch?

TREBLE
Luuunch.
